Project Description
Moving one of the most important historic structures in Portland
The “Ladd Carriage House” is regarded as one of the most important historic structures in downtown Portland. The structure was built in 1883 by William S. Ladd who was pivotal in the early development of Portland and twice served as Portland’s mayor.
This 52 foot wide, 65 foot long and 55 foot tall building weighing approximately 700,000 pounds was moved from its original location to a temporary site in order to construct a four-level underground parking garage. At the narrowest point of the move, the structure had less than one foot of clearance on either side as it made its way between two other buildings. The structure was stored at the temporary site for approximately 18 months while the underground parking garage was being constructed. The structure was then moved back to its original location and placed over the new parking garage. This beautifully refurbished building now sits at the corner of SW Broadway and SW Columbia Street and is currently being utilized as commercial office space.

Good luck to them”, said Nike founder Phil Knight who was downtown to show friends his company’s exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society. “I love that they are preserving this building.”
