PROJECT:
Lower Monumental Dam Gate Replacement, Vancouver, Washington
On December 9, 2009, Thompson Metal Fab, Inc. (TMF) was awarded a contract to fabricate a replacement gate for the Lower Monumental Dam Downstream Navigation Lock for the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE), Walla Walla District. The dimensions of the fully completed gate are 88’-10” wide, 16’-0” deep and 84’-2” high and it weighs 1,482,000 pounds. Due to the large size of this gate, the COE required the gate to be fabricated with a minimum of three separate sections and sent to the jobsite in sections to be assembled together on site.
TMF fabricated the gate in three sections which entailed a “Bottom Section”, “Middle Section”, and “Top Section”. Each section was 88’-10” wide, 16’-0” deep with the Bottom Section 29’-8” high, the Middle Section 23’-0” high and the Top Section 31’-6” high. The Bottom Section weighed 550,000 pounds, the Middle Section weighed 392,000 pounds and the Top Section weighed 540,000 pounds.
Due to the enormous size and complexity of each gate section, it was necessary for TMF to subcontract the moving of these large sections from inside of the shop to an outside assembly area south of our shop. At the assembly area, the three gate sections were mated together and dimensionally checked to make sure the gate was fabricated within the dimensional tolerances allowed by the COE.
On September 28, 2010, TMF subcontracted the moving of the gate sections to Northwest Structural Moving (NWSM). As an addition to their subcontract, TMF asked NWSM to set up bunks inside of the shop, under the fabricated gate sections, jack up each gate section and remove the existing stands that the gates were fabricated on so we could paint those areas. This work was done safely, timely and with precision. All three gate sections required this step inside of our shop prior to moving the sections outside.
On October 6, 2010, October 11, 2010 and November 3, 2010, NWSM moved the Bottom, Middle and Top Sections from our shop to the yard. Each move was well planned and each employee of NWSM was well informed of their duties during the moves. Each section was moved without incident and each move went as planned. Once the Bottom Section was moved out and set onto supports, the Middle Section had to be placed to within 1/16” of level and 1/16” of square to the Bottom Section. With the expertise and the sophisticated equipment used by NWSM, that task was performed without any problems. The same process was done when mating the Top Section to the Middle Section, all with no problems.
Northwest Structural Moving has state of the art equipment and a highly trained team of employees. The success of this project was based upon the final dimensions taken after the sections were mated together in our yard. With the sections being set within such tight tolerances, it made this project a success. TMF will not hesitate to use NWSM on future projects and highly recommends them to others. My hat is off to Keith Settle and his team for a job well done.

Multiple Structure Relocation, Beaverton, Oregon
Russ Auto Group recently had the opportunity to work with NW Structural Moving in the removal of two homes on one of our properties.
After talking with several different companies and reviewing bids, we chose NW Structural Moving because we felt confident in their services. They were very thorough in the evaluation process, and spent a fair amount of time measuring the homes in question. The owner, Keith Settle, was quick to respond to any and all of our phone calls.
The work was completed in a very timely manner with no interruptions to our regular work schedule. It was amazing to see the progress his crew made each day.
We are very satisfied with the work they did for us and would not hesitate to work with them again in the future. Please feel free to call if you have any questions.
